About this position

University of Silesia in Katowice is recruiting one Assistant Professor (post-doc) in the Faculty of Humanities, Institute of History for a fixed-term, full-time research appointment (about 40 hours per week) in Poland.

The position is embedded in the NCN OPUS 28 project “The Subaltern Retinue: 'Family' of the Early Modern Apostolic Nuncios (1559-1700)”, led by Dorota Gregorowicz, PhD. The successful candidate will contribute to research on early modern diplomacy, the papacy, the Holy See, apostolic nunciature, court culture, diplomatic retinues, and related family networks. The role includes archival work in major collections such as the Archivio Apostolico Vaticano and Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, as well as other European archives, plus analysis, editing, publication, team participation, dissemination, and organisational tasks.

Research profile: history, with a strong emphasis on church history and early modern diplomatic history.

Eligibility highlights: applicants need a PhD in history or a related discipline, strong and recent publications, international research experience, and proven archival-research expertise. Very good Italian and good Latin are essential, together with good English. Mobility for research travel abroad is expected and will be funded from project resources. German and prior grant-writing experience are desirable.

Additional rules: the PhD should normally be no more than 12 years old, and the candidate must satisfy the university and NCN OPUS 28 employment conditions, including the requirement that the PhD was earned outside the University of Silesia or that the candidate has at least 10 months of documented post-doctoral experience elsewhere. The post is based at Bankowa 11-12, Katowice.

Funding and contract: the appointment lasts 24 months. The maximum base salary is 8986 PLN per month, with seniority bonus included in the cap; the final amount depends on the candidate’s experience. The position also offers standard university benefits and optional employee schemes.
