About this position
University of Twente is offering a full-time PhD position for a Doctoral Candidate in Spatial integration for high-tech (remote) sensing of natural and built ecosystems within the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), The Netherlands.
This project sits in the ITEM (Infrastructure Twente for Ecosystem Monitoring) initiative and addresses radiative exchanges within and above open-water, agricultural, natural, and urban environments. The research combines in-situ optical-thermal sensor observations with airborne and satellite imagery to develop remote sensing-based observational modelling and to improve the coupling and upscaling of measurements across spatial scales. The work involves near-surface and atmospheric radiative transport process modelling, with attention to bidirectional reflectance characteristics and hotspot effects across multiple land-cover types.
The position is embedded in a multidisciplinary and cross-departmental environment linked to the EES Sectorplan-Beta II and the faculty’s focus areas: Resource Security, GeoAI, Disaster Resilience, and Urban Futures. The successful candidate will contribute to scientific presentations, conference and journal publications, teaching in related ITC courses, and supervision/mentoring of MSc students as needed.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold an MSc in physics, meteorology, hydrology, physical geography, or a related field. Relevant experience in quantitative satellite earth observation analysis tools such as optics and radiative transfer, time-series analysis, data assimilation, or big data handling is desirable, together with strong programming skills in C, C++, Fortran, or a similar language. Good English communication skills, independence, analytical ability, and a collaborative mindset are required.
Funding and appointment: this is a four-year full-time PhD appointment with a qualifier after 6–9 months. The salary starts at €3,059 gross per month in year one and rises to €3,881 gross per month in year four, plus an 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, pension, research support, and professional/personal development via Twente Graduate School.
