About this position

KU Leuven is offering a doctoral fellowship in modern Dutch literature within the Research Group Dutch Literature. The project, titled Sense/ory Negotiations. Special Poetry Editions in Flemish literary culture (1900–2020), is funded by FWO Flanders and supervised by Prof. Linde De Potter.

The doctoral project explores the role of special poetry editions in Flemish literary culture from 1900 to 2020. It focuses on how the materiality of poetry books shapes reading practices and literary experience, with special attention to visual and tactile features. The research sits at the intersection of literary studies, book history, media studies, and cultural studies, and aims to provide the first systematic overview of this publishing practice, trace its historical development, and build a framework for understanding the interplay between textual and sensory dimensions in reading.

The successful candidate will complete a doctoral dissertation over four years while working within a collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment at KU Leuven. Duties include conducting research in Belgian libraries and heritage institutions, managing research data, publishing and presenting preliminary findings, participating in the doctoral training programme, contributing to teaching activities, communicating research to a wider public, and collaborating with researchers within KU Leuven and beyond.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Literary Studies, Language and Literature, Cultural Studies, or an equivalent qualification. Strong academic writing and communication skills in Dutch are required, along with academic-level English. The ideal candidate has an interest in modern Dutch poetry, the materiality of literature, and the literary field in Flanders. The position expects independent work, strong organisation, and teamwork.

This is a full-time doctoral fellowship (BAP) for four years. The appointment starts with one year and is extended by three years after a positive evaluation. A budget for research-related expenses, such as travel, is provided. The application deadline is 2026-08-18. For practical details on the application procedure, salary, and working conditions, consult the KU Leuven information page. For more information about the project, contact Prof. dr. Linde De Potter at linde.depotter@kuleuven.be.
