About this position

Leibniz University Hannover is advertising a Doctoral Researcher position in computational electrodynamics and inverse design of time-varying metamaterials within the ERC project TEMPORE. The work sits at the intersection of physics, mathematics, electrical engineering, computer science, and materials science, with a strong emphasis on nanophotonics, Maxwell’s equations, numerical analysis, and high-performance scientific computing.

The project aims to pioneer inverse design methods for ultrafast, reprogrammable photonic systems operating on picosecond to femtosecond timescales. The doctoral researcher will contribute to mathematical modeling, algorithm development, time-domain solvers, gradient-based optimization, and scalable implementation on modern HPC architectures. The role also includes scientific software engineering, parallel computing, and contributions to open-source research infrastructure.

Applicants should hold a completed master’s degree or equivalent in applied mathematics, physics, computational physics, scientific computing, electrical engineering, telecommunications engineering, or a closely related field. Strong programming skills in C/C++ are required, and Python is preferred. The post also asks for a solid background in numerical methods for time-dependent PDEs, electrodynamics, photonics, algorithm design, and computational complexity. Experience with finite-difference or finite-element methods, adjoint optimization, MPI/OpenMP/CUDA, and research software development is desirable.

The position is funded by the European Research Council under Horizon Europe (ERC Consolidator Grant TEMPORE). It is a 75% TV-L E13 position initially limited to 3 years, with the possibility of extension.
