About this position

Technical University of Munich (TUM) is advertising a Doctoral Researcher position focused on manufacturing-optimized fixed-wing drones/UAVs. The project is carried out in collaboration with Airbus Defence & Space and TUM IWB (Chair of Innovative Production Systems), combining aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, aircraft design, and production optimization.

The research aims to develop an experimental decision-support system for highly efficient UAV design and manufacturing. The post includes research, teaching, and project work, with a strong emphasis on innovative UAV design, production concepts, simulation, experimental validation, and flight testing. The chair works on manned and unmanned aircraft, including scenario analysis, future trends and technologies, civil and military aircraft design, and operational analysis.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have an above-average MSc. or Dipl. degree in aerospace engineering or mechanical engineering; practical experience in designing, building, and testing/flying UAV concepts or model airplanes; solid knowledge of aerospace fundamentals and aircraft design; and good English communication and writing skills for scientific publication. Experience with model and scale aircraft is preferred. Due to security restrictions, only EU citizens will be considered.

Funding/employment: this is a full-time, fixed-term doctoral researcher employment position paid according to TV-L E13 (German public service salary scale). No scholarship name or stipend amount is given.

Application deadline: 16 August 2026. Applications should be submitted by email or mail to the Chair for Aircraft Design at TUM in Garching bei München.
