About this position

PhD opportunity: Agentic AI for Autonomous, Resilient, and Sustainable Smart Grid Systems at Monash University Malaysia.

This project sits at the intersection of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Information Technology, focusing on next-generation smart grids, renewable integration, distributed energy resources, electric vehicles, battery energy storage systems, digital twins, and cyber-physical resilience. The research explores agentic AI, multi-agent systems, physics-informed machine learning, explainable AI, reinforcement learning, graph neural networks, LLMs, and RAG for autonomous grid monitoring, forecasting, diagnosis, optimization, and control.

The project aims to build an autonomous smart grid ecosystem that can support self-healing power networks, DER coordination, microgrid energy management, predictive maintenance, power quality monitoring, and secure operation under cyber-physical threats and extreme events. Validation is planned using IEEE benchmark systems and real-time co-simulation tools such as OpenDSS, MATPOWER, GridLAB-D, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, MATLAB/Simulink, OPAL-RT, or Typhoon HIL, with hardware demonstrations using IoT devices and industrial communication protocols.

Supervisory team: Dr Charles Raymond A/L Sarimuthu (main supervisor) and Dr Patrick Ho (associate supervisor), both at Monash University Malaysia.
