About this position
PhD position in Climate-Resilient Walkability and Urban Heat Adaptation at the School of Engineering and Architecture of Fribourg (HEIA-FR), a member institution of HES-SO, in collaboration with EPFL and connected partners including the University of Fribourg.
The project, COOLWALK – Reinforcing Walkability in City Centres in the Context of Climate Change, is an interdisciplinary research opportunity focused on urban walkability, urban heat islands, thermal comfort, climate adaptation, mobility analysis, and urban design. The PhD candidate will help develop tools and methodologies that link pedestrian behaviour, thermal exposure, and climate-resilient city design.
The position is based at the Smart Living Lab in Fribourg, Switzerland, and is co-supervised by Prof. Marc Vonlanthen (HEIA-FR) and Prof. Andrew Sonta (EPFL / ETHOS Lab). The work includes interdisciplinary research, simulation methods, field measurements, urban experiments, participatory workshops, spatial/environmental/behavioural data analysis, and academic publications.
Applicants should hold a Master's degree in a relevant field such as urban planning, civil engineering, architecture, environmental sciences, geography, mobility studies, data science, or a related discipline. Strong interest in sustainable cities, climate adaptation, and active mobility is expected, along with experience or interest in data analysis, GIS, simulation, urban modelling, programming, or environmental modelling. Excellent English is required; French is a plus.
