About this position

Call for applications for a PhD position at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Netherlands, in the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, within the Railway Engineering Section of the Department of Engineering Structures.

The project is titled “Developing a Digital Health Passport for Railway Tracks on Bridges” and focuses on creating a data-driven system to continuously monitor railway track conditions and predict deterioration. The research combines sensor data, data analytics, and physics-based modelling to study railway bridges and tracks, train-track-bridge interactions, structural responses, and railway infrastructure behaviour.

Planned research activities include analysing historical and real-time sensor data, developing onboard measurement systems using technologies such as Axle Box Acceleration (ABA) and Laser Doppler Vibrometry (LDV), and building a continuously updated digital record of track health.

Eligible applicants should have a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mathematics/Mechanics, Computer Science, or a related field. Relevant interests include railway or bridge engineering, structural dynamics, vibration analysis, structural health monitoring, data science, and scientific computing. Programming skills in Python and MATLAB (or similar tools) are expected, along with strong analytical skills, the ability to collaborate with academic and industry partners, and excellent English communication skills.

The position is fully funded for 4 years and offers a salary of €3,059–€3,881 per month, plus 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, pension, and flexible working arrangements.

Funding details
