About this position
PhD opportunity at Wageningen University & Research in Engineering Trustworthy Energy Data Spaces for Heat Transition Planning.
This project sits in the Information Technology Group and is part of the newly funded NWO KIC project “Sharing the Warmth”, an interdisciplinary collaboration with Wageningen University, TU Delft, Hogeschool Utrecht, CWI, Dutch municipalities, DSOs, and other societal and industry partners. The research focuses on how heterogeneous energy data can be shared securely, interoperably, and efficiently to support the heat transition.
Research themes include data spaces, distributed systems, interoperability, data orchestration, semantic technologies, privacy-preserving data analytics, and potentially artificial intelligence and software architecture. The project aims to develop novel methods, architectural patterns, and engineering approaches for trusted data sharing across complex energy ecosystems, rather than only implementing existing reference architectures.
The PhD candidate will analyse data requirements and interoperability challenges, design trustworthy orchestration mechanisms, develop semantic interoperability and API-based exchange methods, integrate privacy-preserving technologies and AI-assisted data engineering, and evaluate solutions through technical validation and real-world case studies with municipalities, DSOs, households, and partners.
Eligibility highlights: a completed MSc in a relevant field such as computer science, software engineering, data science, artificial intelligence, electrical engineering, or information systems; strong interest in energy data sharing and future energy systems; programming skills in Python or Java; excellent English; and C1-level English with an internationally recognized certificate.
Funding: fully funded PhD position. Salary starts at €3,059/month in year 1 and rises to €3,881/month in year 4, based on a 38-hour work week. The appointment is initially for 18 months and may be extended for the project duration if performance is good.
