About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Bayreuth in the Chair of Inorganic Active Materials for Electrochemical Energy Storage, led by Prof. Dr. Matteo Bianchini. The project is centered on Fe-based layered oxides, Na/Li ion exchange, and the development of sustainable Li-ion battery cathode materials.

The research combines experimental materials chemistry with computational modelling in collaboration with Dr. Sicolo and Prof. Albe at TU Darmstadt. You will work on the synthesis and characterization of layered oxide materials, including structural, spectroscopic, and electrochemical techniques, with a focus on understanding ion exchange reactions, phase purity, structural defects, and faulting mechanisms. The broader aim is to stabilize metastable polymorphs and reduce reliance on Co- and Ni-based battery technologies.

This is a PhD student position. Applicants should hold a Master’s or Diploma degree in inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, materials science, or a related field. Prior experience in battery materials, solid-state chemistry, crystallography, or computational modelling is helpful but not mandatory. The position is temporary, with an initial 1-year contract and the possibility of a 2-year extension.

Funding: German salary scale TV-L E13 (67%).

Deadline: 30 August 2026.

How to apply: Apply online through the University of Bayreuth application portal, using the keyword “Ion exchange”. Submit your CV, BSc/MSc transcripts, and a cover letter specific to this position.
