About this position

PhD position at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, focused on learning and control for complex large-scale systems with applications in greenhouses and controlled environment agriculture.

The project is part of GreenControl, a consortium involving TU Delft, Wageningen University, University of Twente, TU Eindhoven, and industrial partners. The research aims to move from average climate control to crop-centric control using microclimate sensing, crop modelling, and data-driven/model-based control to improve photosynthesis efficiency and reduce energy use and costs.

Core research topics include systems and control, applied mathematics, machine learning, PDEs, Koopman operators, SINDy, neural networks, reduced-order hybrid model learning, optimal sensor and actuator placement, and predictive control for airflow, CO2 dosing, heating, lighting, and ventilation under fluctuating energy prices.

The position is suitable for candidates with a relevant MSc degree in systems and control, applied mathematics, engineering, or a related field. A strong interest in control theory, machine learning, and biological system applications is expected; experimental experience with physical or biological systems is a plus.

Funding is through a 4-year PhD employment contract at TU Delft, with salary from €3059 to €3881 gross per month plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. The candidate will join the TU Delft Graduate School and work with an international team of supervisors and consortium partners.

Deadline: 30 September 2026. Apply online and upload a CV, motivation letter, research-oriented writing sample(s), and BSc/MSc transcripts. If shortlisted, you will also need to provide two referees with email addresses.
