About this position
PhD position in Materials Science at CNRS in France, focused on a virtual laboratory for predicting microcracking in refractory materials. The project combines Discrete Element Method (DEM), microstructure, thermomechanics, digital twins, and numerical simulation of damage evolution and anisotropic material behavior.
The doctoral work is part of the REFFRACTEUR European Doctoral Network and will be carried out across two French sites: IMERYS research site in Lyon and IRCER (Institute of Research on Ceramics), University of Limoges. The project is hosted by CNRS UMR 7315 and involves validation against experimental measurements such as CTE, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, stress-strain behavior, fracture energy, SEM, and X-ray microtomography.
Eligibility highlights: a Master's degree in Materials Science and/or Computational Methods in Mechanical Engineering (or closely related field), strong numerical methods background in solid mechanics, good knowledge of materials science and experimental characterization, and excellent English. Python and/or C++ experience is a strong advantage. French basic level is listed.
Funding: the position is a 36-month full-time temporary PhD funded through Horizon Europe - MSCA. No stipend amount is stated in the post.
Deadline: 21 August 2026, 23:59 UTC. Apply through the CNRS application page or the Euraxess listing.
