About this position
Doctoral Researcher in Optical Satellite Communications at the University of Luxembourg, Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT), Signal Processing and Communications (SIGCOM) group.
This is an industrial PhD opportunity in collaboration with SES, focused on high-capacity coherent optical feeder links for ground-to-satellite communication. The research addresses real operational challenges for future satellite systems, including atmospheric impairments, link availability, scalable high-data-rate transmission, and next-generation optical infrastructure.
Research topics include atmospheric effects on optical links (turbulence-induced fading, scintillation, beam wander, wavefront distortions, cloud/aerosol impacts), physical-layer modeling and mitigation, adaptive modulation and coding, diversity schemes, advanced receiver processing, simulation frameworks, and system-level trade-offs for optical terminal and network performance.
Academic background sought: MSc or MEng in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Photonics, Applied Physics, or a closely related field. Strong preparation in digital communication systems, signal processing, and applied mathematics is expected. Experience with optical communication systems, free-space optical communication, satellite communications, or atmospheric propagation is a strong advantage. Programming/simulation skills in MATLAB, Python, C, or C++ are required.
Language requirement: at least B2-level proficiency in the language of the thesis.
Funding: fixed-term full-time doctoral contract for 36 months, extendable to 48 months if required. The yearly gross salary is EUR 41,976.
How to apply: submit a CV, cover letter, and transcript of university-level courses/results via the online HR system. Include degree details and thesis summary in the CV. Applications by email will not be considered. Early application is encouraged because applications are processed upon reception.
Location: Kirchberg Campus, Luxembourg.
