About this position
PhD opportunity at Cranfield University on smart electrochromic thin films for active surfaces, in collaboration with BAE Systems Electronic Systems and funded by EPSRC Industrial Doctorate Link Award (IDLA).
The project focuses on developing advanced electrochromic thin-film coating technologies for spherical and curved glass surfaces, with applications in dynamic light control, fast response optical modulation, and rugged non-planar optics. Research themes include materials science, coatings deposition, device engineering, electrochemistry, and optical characterisation.
Key tasks include reviewing electrochromic technologies, developing transparent electrodes and active materials, optimising large-area deposition methods such as physical vapour deposition, building and testing prototypes, and characterising switching speed, optical clarity, colour modulation, cycling stability, and uniformity across curved surfaces. The industrial partner will support requirements, modelling, and prototype testing.
This is a fully funded 4-year PhD studentship with an annual tax-free bursary of £26,894 plus full tuition fees. It is open to Home (UK) applicants only.
Entry requirements: a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering discipline such as materials science, solid-state physics, or chemistry. Useful experience includes deposition methods, voltammetry/amperometry, impedance spectroscopy, electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and UV/Vis/IR spectrophotometry.
Deadline: 19 August 2026. Start date: 28 September 2026.
How to apply: confirm eligibility for Home fee status, then submit the online application form and upload all required documents. Contact Prof Krzysztof Koziol at k.koziol@cranfield.ac.uk for further information.
