About this position

Wageningen University & Research is advertising a PhD position in Understanding and Decreasing N2O emissions in Deammonification within the UNITED project (Understanding and Narrowing Impacts of Targeted N2O Emissions in Deammonification).

The project focuses on wastewater treatment, nitrous oxide emissions, deammonification reactors, and strategies to improve sustainability and reduce the CO2 footprint of wastewater treatment plants. The successful candidate will work with Environmental Technology at Wageningen University & Research and collaborate with stakeholders from the water sector, including technology providers and end users.

Research tasks include bioreactor experiments, analysis of N2O production data from full-scale deammonification reactors in the Netherlands, studying rejection water composition, and developing/testing mitigation measures in a full-scale reactor. The role also involves communicating findings with consortium partners, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and presenting at national and international conferences.

Eligibility highlights: an MSc in environmental sciences, water technology, biotechnology, chemical engineering, biobased sciences, or a closely related field; hands-on experience with experimental methods for biological nitrogen removal; proven data analysis skills; and the ability to connect fundamental science with applied process engineering. English at C1 level is expected, and Dutch is an advantage.

This is a fully funded PhD position with a salary starting at €3,059 per month and rising to €3,881 in year four (38 hours/week). The contract is initially for 18 months and may be extended for the project duration. The application deadline is 5 October 2026.
