About this position
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in women, yet millions with chest pain suffer from ANOCA—a condition caused by dysfunction of the coronary vessels that is frequently missed by standard diagnostic tests. The current gold-standard CFT test is invasive, costly, painful, and limited in availability, resulting in years of uncertainty and repeated hospital visits for many patients before receiving a diagnosis.
This PhD project at University Medical Center Utrecht aims to develop the first blood-based test for ANOCA, leveraging next generation sequencing, multi-omics analyses, and advanced machine learning. The goal is to diagnose the disease and identify its underlying subtype from a simple blood draw, potentially reducing diagnosis time from years to weeks, replacing unnecessary invasive procedures, lowering healthcare costs, and enabling earlier, more personalized treatment for a large and underserved patient population.
By integrating clinical data, sequencing data, and circulating biomarkers, the project will: (1) develop and validate advanced machine learning models for the stratification and diagnosis of ANOCA; (2) provide cell-type–resolved and pathway-level mechanistic insights into ANOCA pathophysiology through multi-omics analyses; and (3) contribute to the clinical translation, implementation, and commercialization of novel diagnostic technologies, including potential spin-off creation.
The research environment offers access to cutting-edge sequencing platforms, clinical datasets, and interdisciplinary collaboration between clinicians, biologists, and data scientists. The project is ideal for candidates interested in translational medicine, computational biology, and healthcare innovation. Funding details and eligibility requirements are not specified in the current description. The application window is open; please check the AcademicTransfer portal for updates and deadlines.
