About this position
PhD position in Antimicrobial Resistance Evolution at Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (University of Kiel), Germany.
The Schulenburg group is recruiting a PhD researcher for a 3.5-year project (possible 6-month extension) focused on how evolutionary principles can be used to constrain bacterial adaptation to antimicrobial drugs. The project examines mutation rates, resistance evolution, and evolutionary trade-offs such as collateral sensitivity, with model pathogens including UTI E. coli and/or Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
The position is integrated into the graduate school on Translational Evolutionary Research, offering opportunities to collaborate with researchers working on related topics in evolutionary biology, microbiology, and antimicrobial resistance.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold an MSc or equivalent in Evolutionary Biology or Microbiology, have experience in experimental and molecular laboratory work with microorganisms, and possess knowledge of statistics or bioinformatics. Strong English skills at C1 level are required. Helpful extras include experience in antimicrobial resistance research, evolution experiments, genome analysis, genetic manipulation of microorganisms, and prior publications.
Funding: the post is a temporary full-time PhD contract; no stipend amount is stated. It is not funded through an EU research framework programme.
How to apply: submit a single PDF containing a motivation letter, CV, and master certificate or current transcript if your degree is ongoing. Apply through the university link before 23 August 2026, 22:00 (Europe/Berlin). For enquiries, contact Prof. Dr. Hinrich Schulenburg at hschulenburg@zoologie.uni-kiel.de.
