This PhD opening is part of the SoCool Project at the Institute of Materials and Devices – Materials Synthesis and Manufacturing Processes (IMD-2) at Forschungszentrum Jülich. The project focuses on metal-supported solid oxide electrolysis cells (MS-SOECs), high-temperature electrolysis (HTEL), and the development of innovative coating and sintering routes for oxide-ceramic functional layers on metallic support structures.
The research is centered on proof-of-concept experiments for coating complex metallic supports, pretreatment and processing of oxide-ceramic powders, selecting suitable suspension-based coating techniques (such as screen printing, plasma spraying, dip coating, and electrophoretic deposition), developing sintering processes under protective or hydrogen atmospheres, and characterizing microstructure, phase composition, and surface quality.
Applicants should hold a Master's degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or a related field with excellent academic performance. Strong knowledge of ceramic processing, rheology, materials science, and solid-state chemistry is expected. Experience with powder synthesis and ceramic component fabrication is a plus. The post also requires excellent English (at least B2 CEFR) and business-fluent German.
The position is based in Jülich, Germany, is fixed-term for 3 years, and is funded at TVöD-Bund pay group 13 (75%) with a year-end bonus and capital-forming benefits.
