About this position

PhD opportunity at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in nanophotonics, optics, wearable metasurfaces, and photonic crystals, with a strong application focus on non-invasive cardiovascular monitoring and health sensing.

The project aims to fabricate and characterize wearable optical metasurfaces and photonic crystals, study complex light–device interactions, and perform in vivo characterization using advanced spectroscopic modules. A key research direction is the detection of vital signals and the development of nanophotonic approaches that push the limits of non-invasive cardiovascular monitoring.

The work will be carried out at the Department of Electronic Systems, NTNU, in close collaboration with partners at St. Olavs, the Department of Circulation and Medical Imaging, and the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. This makes the position especially relevant for candidates interested in interdisciplinary research spanning physics, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science, and medical science.

Eligibility highlight: experience in cleanroom nanofabrication processes is essential. The post describes the ideal candidate as creative, skilled, and ambitious.

Application note: the position is not yet officially published. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Associate Professor Angelos Xomalis directly by email to express interest and discuss the opportunity.

Supervisor/announcer: Angelos Xomalis, Associate Professor of Nanophotonics and Optical Engineering at NTNU, also affiliated with the University of Southampton.
