About this position

PhD opportunity at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and QuTech in the area of quantum error correction for photonic, optical, and microwave quantum computing architectures. The project is part of the European Marie Curie Doctoral Training Network QuBriC, focused on quantum error correction and fault tolerance.

The research aims to develop fault-tolerant architectures for photonic platforms based on fusion-based and measurement-based computation, with attention to photon loss and other hardware-specific errors. The work includes extending circuit-based quantum error correction ideas to fusion-based computation, using ZX calculus, and designing, numerically simulating, and decoding small quantum error correction protocols that are near-term or immediately feasible on photonic hardware.

The PhD candidate will be embedded in the Terhal group in the Department of Applied Math, Faculty of EEMCS, and may collaborate with experimental researchers at QuTech and the Delft office of Riverlane. The training network also supports secondments at partners such as QuiX (Enschede) and UCL (London).

Funding: EU-funded project with a 4-year employment contract. Salary is €3204–€4051 gross per month, plus 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.

Eligibility highlights: Master’s degree in physics or quantum technology; theoretical background in optics and quantum technologies; preferred experience in quantum error correction; strong English communication skills; self-drive, scientific curiosity, and teamwork.
