About this position
The Institute of Molecular Regenerative Medicine at Paracelsus Medical Private University (PMU) in Salzburg, Austria is offering a PhD position focused on spinal cord injury (SCI) research. This opportunity sits within the PMU PhD program in Medical Science and is aimed at developing a clinically translatable regenerative approach for traumatic SCI, a condition that currently lacks effective regenerative therapies.
The project investigates the therapeutic potential of human platelet lysate as a pro-regenerative treatment for SCI. The research is positioned at the interface of neuroscience, biomaterials, and translational medicine, with strong emphasis on mechanism and therapy development. The successful candidate will gain experience in both in vitro and in vivo experimental approaches and will be encouraged to present findings at international conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
Applicants should hold a completed Master’s degree in Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Medical Biology, Pharmacology, or a related discipline before starting the position. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture, standard cell biology techniques, and work under S2 conditions. The role also requires strong organisational skills, careful data documentation, a high level of accuracy, and willingness to work with laboratory animals after the required training. Additional advantages include experience with rat and mouse handling, modern CNS injury models, complex co-culture or organoid systems, and bioinformatics.
PMU describes itself as an interdisciplinary and supportive environment combining excellence in research and teaching in medicine, nursing, and pharmacy. The position offers a gross annual remuneration of EUR 39,343.36 based on a 30-hour-per-week PhD appointment. The start date is 1 October 2026, and applications are due by 31 August 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Berlin).
To apply, send a short CV, a motivation letter of up to one page, and up to three references including names and email addresses to Ludwig Aigner and Gabriele Steinkogler via the email address provided in the posting. The position is based in Salzburg, Austria.
