About this position
This PhD position at the University of Twente focuses on Synthetic Active Matter: Unravelling 3D Real-Space Dynamics. The project investigates artificial microswimmers and microrobots that can move and interact autonomously in three-dimensional environments, with the goal of understanding how life-like collective behavior emerges in synthetic systems.
You will develop an experimental platform for studying 3D self-organization of active particles, fabricate and characterize light-driven microswimmers, and use advanced optical microscopy and particle tracking to analyze motion and interactions. The research will explore emergent phenomena such as swarming, clustering, and collective navigation in confined and complex environments, connecting physics, chemistry, biophysics, and materials science.
The work is hosted by the Active Soft Matter Lab within the TNW Faculty and the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology at the University of Twente in Enschede, The Netherlands. The project is highly interdisciplinary and offers opportunities to collaborate with academic and industrial partners, using state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. Long-term applications include targeted drug delivery, cargo transport, biosensing, microfluidic mixing, and self-healing materials.
The position is a full-time PhD appointment for four years, with a qualifier in the first year. Funding follows the Dutch university collective labour agreement (CAO-NU) and includes a gross monthly salary from €3,059 in year one to €3,881 in year four, plus a holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, pension scheme, and leave benefits.
Applicants should have a master’s degree or equivalent in Applied Physics, Chemistry, Biophysics, or a closely related field at the Physics-Chemistry interface. MSc graduates in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering are also encouraged to apply, especially with soft-matter experience. Experimental experience in optical microscopy and colloidal synthesis is advantageous, and skills in Python, ImageJ, and/or MATLAB are useful for data analysis. Strong English communication skills are required.
