About this position
The Humanoid Robots Lab at the University of Bonn in Germany is advertising two fully funded PhD positions with Prof. Dr. Maren Bennewitz. The openings are in robotics, computer science, and related AI areas, with two research directions: VLM-based reasoning and robotic intervention in greenhouses, and uncertainty-aware active perception and mobile manipulation.
The greenhouse project focuses on human-in-the-loop robots for 3D crop perception, vision-language reasoning, and safe physical interventions such as inspection, leaf manipulation, and selective harvesting. The second project targets task-oriented perception and manipulation methods that propagate uncertainty from belief space to action space for operation in cluttered and dynamic environments.
The positions are fully funded according to TV-L E13 (100%). The lab highlights access to humanoids, quadrupeds, mobile manipulators, UAVs, VR systems, motion-capture facilities, and high-performance computing resources, plus collaboration in major projects such as PhenoRob, Robotics Institute Germany, and the Lamarr Institute.
Applicants should have a completed Master’s degree in computer science, robotics, artificial intelligence, or a closely related field. Strong research experience in active perception, robot planning, mobile manipulation, humanoid robotics, multi-robot systems, 3D reconstruction, semantic mapping, vision-language models, robot learning, or agricultural robotics is preferred. Excellent programming skills, experience with real robots, deep learning frameworks, robot simulation, 3D sensing, mobile robots, legged locomotion, or humanoids are highly desirable, along with very good English communication skills.
Applications are handled exclusively through the online form. Prepare a single PDF file under 8 MB containing your CV, a one-page motivation letter, Bachelor’s and Master’s transcripts, links to your MSc thesis and/or papers, links to GitHub/personal website/LinkedIn/Google Scholar if available, and contact information for two referees. The post states that applications are open until the positions are filled.
