About this position
PhD Research Fellow in Ecology at the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN), with a project focused on Tropical Forest Ecology, Conservation, Biodiversity, Climate Change, and Dendroecology.
The position is part of the project “Tree growth in vulnerable tropical forests – impact of climate change and habitat destruction”, an international collaboration between USN, the University of the Valley of Guatemala (UVG), and the University of São Paulo (USP). The research examines seasonally dry tropical forests and mangrove forests in Central America, using tree-ring and ecological data to understand how climate change and land-use change affect tree growth and forest resilience.
The work combines extensive fieldwork in Guatemala, lab preparation and analysis of tree-core samples, GIS-based environmental analysis, and statistical modelling in R. The successful candidate will be affiliated with the EcoHub research group and supervised by Associate Professor Dr. Stefanie Reinhardt, together with collaborators Prof. Daniel Ariano, Assistant Prof. Giuliano Maselli Locosselli, Associate Prof. Lærke Søndergaard Stewart, and Associate Prof. Roland Pape.
This is a three-year PhD research fellowship with organised research training. The position is based at campus Bø, Midt-Telemark municipality, Norway, and includes two fieldwork periods of about three months each in Guatemala. Salary is according to the Norwegian State salary scale for PhD research fellows (position code 1017), NOK 550,800.
Eligibility highlights include a master’s degree in ecology or a related field, strong ecological data collection and analysis skills, good English, advanced Spanish (C1 or higher), and a valid driver’s license suitable for an International Driving Permit or a Guatemalan-valid license. Preferred experience includes tropical forest fieldwork, lab analyses, R, QGIS, vascular plant identification, and familiarity with Guatemalan culture and nature.
Applications must be submitted through Jobbnorge by 14 August 2026. Required documents include diplomas, thesis, motivation letter, English documentation, publications, and references. Applicants with foreign education must also provide HK-dir approval documentation.
