About this position

FCiências.ID is recruiting a Scientific Researcher / Assistant Researcher for the VERITRACE project, Traces de la Vérité: The reappropriation of ancient wisdom in early modern natural philosophy, supported by the European Research Council under Horizon Europe. The post is based at the Interuniversity Center for the History of Science and Technology (CIUHCT) in Lisbon, Portugal.

This is a full-time, temporary research employment position with an expected duration of about 12 months, starting in October 2026. The salary is 4,493.63 EUR gross per month, with holiday and Christmas allowances and food allowance under Portuguese labour rules.

The project focuses on early modern natural philosophy, history of philosophy, and the digital analysis of texts. The selected researcher will help develop a prisca sapientia vocabulary in Latin, English, and at least one additional language (French, German, or Italian), map intertextuality in the project corpus, and provide semantic input for sentiment analysis. The role is especially relevant for researchers working at the intersection of philosophy, linguistics, literary studies, and computational humanities.

Eligible applicants must hold a PhD awarded at least five years before the application date, and must demonstrate expertise in history of philosophy with emphasis on early modern linguistics, or in linguistics/literature with strong experience in early modern natural philosophy. Experience with computational humanities, corpus linguistics, intertextuality, and sentiment analysis is essential, along with strong knowledge of Latin, English, and French. Familiarity with the project’s core textual sources—the Chaldean Oracles, Orphic Hymns, Sibylline Oracles, and Corpus Hermeticum—is also required. Preference is given to candidates with project experience, supervision of postgraduate students, and proficiency in Portuguese and English.

Applications open from 3 August 2026 to 14 August 2026. Candidates must apply online through the FCiências.ID portal and submit a CV, a motivation letter in English, up to five relevant publications, and proof of the doctoral degree. If the degree was obtained abroad, Portuguese recognition will be required for contract signature.

This opportunity is based in Lisbon, Portugal, within a project that combines textual scholarship, philosophical history, and digital humanities methods.
