About this position

Post-doctoral position in reactive transport modelling of a flotation reactor at BRGM (France).

This 24-month full-time postdoctoral contract is hosted by the French Geological Survey (BRGM) in Orléans, within the Geophysics and Surface Remote Sensing unit of the Subsurface Knowledge and Geomodelling Department. The project is part of the PEPR Sous-sol MINFLOT initiative and focuses on multi-physical and multi-scale modelling to improve the recovery of rare and critical metals from mineral flotation reactors.

The research aims to connect processes at the atomic and particle scales with reactor-scale behaviour. The successful candidate will develop a multi-scale model of mineral flotation that accounts for adhesion and repulsion forces of DLVO type, complex chemistry of interacting phases, bubble-particle interactions, aggregation, and detachment rates. The work includes reactive transport calculations using geochemistry software such as PHREEQC, with possible coupling to CFD tools based on Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) models. The modelling effort will be used to predict flotation performance from pulp chemistry and mineralogy and to improve understanding of the mechanisms governing metal recovery.

BRGM is France’s leading public institution for Earth Science applications, with a strong focus on subsurface knowledge, environmental challenges, and the sustainable extraction of critical metals such as lithium, tungsten, cobalt, and nickel. The postdoc therefore sits at the interface of geosciences, geochemistry, transport modelling, and mineral processing, with a clear application to more efficient and sustainable ore processing methods.

Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) and have 1–3 years of experience. Strong Python skills are required; knowledge of C++ is an asset. Prior experience in coupled transport modelling is expected, and reactive transport modelling experience is particularly valued. The role also calls for scientific curiosity, teamwork, and good writing skills.

The appointment is a temporary, full-time research contract with a duration of 24 months.
