About this position

AITHYRA in Vienna, Austria, is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow or Bioinformatics Scientist for the Nomburg Lab. AITHYRA is a biomedical research institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) with support from the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation Mainz, bringing together AI, experimental science, and engineering to advance biomedical discovery.

The Nomburg Lab works at the intersection of AI, structural biology, high-throughput molecular virology, and immunology to study the virus-host conflict. The project focuses on protein structure-based approaches, including structural prediction, comparison, and phylogenetics, with an emphasis on viral immune antagonists and interactions between viruses and cellular immunity. The role is described as 80% to 100% computational, with optional experimental involvement depending on the candidate’s interests.

The lab highlights a highly collaborative environment, access to AI-guided robotics, high-performance computing, experimental laboratories, and collaboration with other PIs across AITHYRA. The institute also emphasizes mentorship, training, career development, inclusion, and flexible working arrangements.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in bioinformatics, biology, virology, computer science, or a related field. Strong experience in Python, R, and/or bash is expected, along with a proven track record leading computational biology projects, at least one first-author publication, and experience with HPC systems. For the bioinformatics scientist role, at least one year of post-Ph.D. bioinformatics experience is required.

Funding is available for 2 to 5 years. The post includes a gross annual salary of 70,200 EUR for postdoctoral fellows or at least 72,000 EUR for bioinformatics scientists, plus relocation allowance and a fully paid business apartment for the first three months.

Applications are due on 2026-09-15. Candidates should submit a CV with full publication list, a GitHub link with representative code, a cover letter, and contact details for at least two professional references through the online application portal.
