About this position

IMT Atlantique is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher in sociology or political science for the European DISCOVER project, an interdisciplinary research initiative focused on designing two robots for the intelligent acquisition and analysis of data on materials from demolition sites, with the goal of enabling reuse and supporting circular-economy pathways.

The position is hosted in the Interdisciplinary Department of Social Sciences (DI2S) at IMT Atlantique in Nantes, France. The social-science component of the project has two main aims: first, to analyze how the proposed technologies can be adapted to existing professional practices; second, to understand how markets are emerging that could accommodate waste transformed into resources. The project sits at the intersection of sociology, political science, robotics, computer science, energy, and environmental science.

The successful candidate will work with Sarah Ghaffari and contribute to the empirical research through literature reviews, semi-structured interviews, observation, and document analysis. The role also includes participation in scientific dissemination at national and international conferences, contribution to MOOCs developed in the project, administrative support for project coordination, and help organizing scientific events.

This is a full-time postdoctoral contract under the Horizon Europe framework, with an indicative salary of €35,800 gross per year depending on profile and experience. The contract starts on 1 October 2026 and is described as a temporary position of 18 months.

Applicants should hold a PhD in sociology or political science obtained no more than three years before the start date, although the call notes that candidates beyond that limit may be reclassified as a Research Engineer if they have relevant experience. Strong qualifications in qualitative research methods are essential, along with excellent French and English. The post particularly values expertise in STS, sociology of markets, urban policy, waste management, circular economy, human-robot interaction, construction/deconstruction sectors, and socio-technical innovation.

Applications must be submitted via the RECRUITEE platform using the job link provided. The deadline in the selection process is 25 August 2026, and interviews are scheduled for 10-11 September 2026.
