About this position

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Computational Solid Mechanics for Digital Certification and Qualification at its Oak Ridge, Tennessee, United States location.

The project focuses on multiscale modeling and simulation to develop probabilistic lifing frameworks for high-temperature alloys and extreme environment structural materials. The successful candidate will work in the Deposition Science and Technology Group within the Manufacturing Science Division of the Energy Science and Technology Directorate, collaborating with researchers and industry partners on certification and qualification of components made by advanced manufacturing processes.

Research topics include implementation of nonlinear constitutive models in commercial or open-source finite element codes, development of crystal plasticity models for additively manufactured alloys, and probabilistic approaches for fatigue and ductile fracture. The role also includes presenting results, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, contributing to proposals, and working in a multidisciplinary environment spanning materials science, mechanical engineering, heat transfer, and computational science.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely relevant field earned within the past five years, and must complete all degree requirements before appointment. A strong background in mechanical behavior of materials and experience with constitutive modeling in FE software are required. Preferred experience includes multi-physics FE simulations, machine learning, and optimization frameworks.
