About this position

Postdoctoral Research Associate opportunity at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in multiscale optical and scanning probe characterization of integrated semiconductor interfaces.

This position is based in the Functional Atomic Force Microscopy (FAFM) group within the Nanomaterials Characterization Section, Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS), Physical Science Directorate at ORNL, and is part of the Department of Energy’s Nanoscale Science Research Center MEERCAT project.

The research centers on semiconductor interfaces, buried defects, charge-transfer processes, two-dimensional materials, and other low-dimensional materials in vertically integrated microelectronic and optoelectronic structures. The work combines photoinduced force microscopy (PiFM), photoluminescence, electroluminescence, and complementary methods such as Kelvin probe force microscopy, scanning microwave impedance microscopy, cathodoluminescence, Raman spectroscopy, and electron microscopy.

Applicants should have a PhD in materials science and engineering, physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, or a related field completed within the last 5 years. Preferred experience includes nanoscale optical spectroscopy, scanning probe microscopy, semiconductor materials/devices, AFM-based surface and interface characterization, Raman/SEM, and data analysis with Python or MATLAB.

The appointment is up to 24 months with possible extension, depending on performance and funding. ORNL provides competitive pay and benefits.
