About this position
Postdoctoral Research Associate opportunity at the University of Edinburgh in Muslim Societies in Latin America and the Caribbean.
This fixed-term, part-time post (0.8 FTE; 28 hours/week) is based in the Department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies / Alwaleed Centre for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World. The role sits within the internationally funded project “The Global Landscapes of Muslim Lives: Latin American and Caribbean Intersections”, led by Dr Kholoud Al-Ajarma (University of Edinburgh) and Dr Kenneth Chitwood (University of Bayreuth), and funded by the AHRC and DFG.
The successful candidate will develop and deliver an independent programme of ethnographic and qualitative research on contemporary Muslim communities in Latin America and/or the Caribbean, undertake original fieldwork, contribute to publications, and support knowledge exchange, public engagement, workshops, and symposia. The post is for 24 months, starting November 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD in Anthropology, Sociology, Islamic Studies, Religious Studies, Politics and International Relations, Area Studies, or a related discipline; experience with independent qualitative/ethnographic research and fieldwork; research expertise on Islam and Muslim communities in Latin America and/or the Caribbean; strong writing and analytical skills; ability to work collaboratively in an international team.
Funding and conditions: salary at Grade UE07 (£41,064–£48,822 per annum, pro rata), with university support for sponsorship of international workers if needed. Applicants requiring sponsorship must meet UK Home Office English language requirements and obtain a Skilled Worker Visa.

Funding details
