About this position

Bangor University is advertising a Postdoctoral Research Officer in wastewater epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) bioinformatics within the School of Environmental & Natural Sciences. The role is embedded in an active wastewater research team led by Professor Davey Jones and Dr Luke Hillary, and is based at the Environment Centre Wales in Bangor, North Wales, with some remote working possible within the UK.

The successful candidate will analyse and integrate large-scale metagenomic, amplicon sequencing, and qPCR datasets from freshwater, agricultural runoff, and municipal wastewater systems. The work focuses on characterising the resistome and mobilome, identifying AMR gene profiles, mobile genetic elements, and resistant pathogen lineages, and generating actionable intelligence for public health and environmental monitoring. Collaboration is expected with partners including Verily Life Science and Public Health Wales.

Eligibility highlights: PhD (awarded or near completion) in bioinformatics, microbial genomics, computational biology, environmental microbiology, or a closely related field; experience with workflow tools such as Snakemake or Nextflow; strong metagenomic analysis skills; and proficiency in Python and/or R. Experience with HPC and/or cloud computing is required. Desirable experience includes long-read sequencing, hybrid assembly, wastewater epidemiology, mobile genetic elements, open-source development, GIS/spatial analysis, and multidisciplinary consortium work.

Funding and terms: fixed-term, full-time appointment for 36 months (3 years), salary £38,784–£46,049 p.a. (Grade 7). The post is subject to funding confirmation.
