About this position

Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) in Palisades, New York is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to study the mechanisms controlling variability in the tracks and intensity of Low-Pressure Systems (LPSs) in the South Asia Monsoon.

The project sits at the intersection of Earth Science, Environmental Science, and climate dynamics, with a strong emphasis on observations, hierarchy of model simulations, ad-hoc experiments, and ENSO-related climate change impacts. The successful candidate will work with researchers at Columbia Climate School and LDEO, in collaboration with scientists in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at The City College of New York.

Research themes include: analyzing observational and model data to test mechanisms of LPS variability; exploring how ENSO-like climate change may alter future LPS distribution and extreme rainfall; and understanding how LPS variability affects the ENSO-monsoon teleconnection in a changing climate.

Applicants should have recently completed or be nearing completion of a PhD in climate and ocean sciences or a related discipline, and a background in theory and modeling is preferred. The appointment is initially for one year, with continuation dependent on available funding and research progress.

Applications are accepted online only through Interfolio. The position is open until filled and will remain open for at least 30 days after the posting date.
