About this position

Politecnico di Torino is inviting applications for a postdoctoral research position in the ERC Advanced Grant project FRAMEGLOW, focused on the computational modelling of fracture, friction, instability, and wave propagation in snow and ice under changing environmental conditions.

The researcher will be based at the Department of Applied Science and Technology in the Physics area and will contribute to the development and application of numerical models for fracture mechanics, friction, wave propagation, and dynamic instabilities. The work includes building and implementing discrete and continuum mechanical models, simulating nonlinear and rate-dependent phenomena, analysing fracture initiation and propagation, and integrating numerical simulations with theoretical and experimental results. There is also scope for using data-driven or physics-based machine-learning approaches.

This opportunity is especially relevant for candidates with a strong background in solid mechanics, fracture mechanics, and computational mechanics. Strong scientific programming skills and proficiency in written and spoken English are required. Additional experience in nonlinear mechanics, discrete models, finite-element methods, friction, dynamic fracture, multiscale modelling, machine learning, or high-performance computing will be considered an advantage. Prior experience with snow or ice is welcome but not necessary.
