About this position

We are recruiting a fully funded 18-month postdoctoral researcher at the LIRMM, University of Montpellier, France, for a project on Modeling and Optimal Path Planning of an Automated Kite-Based Ship Propulsion System.

The research sits at the intersection of marine robotics, control engineering, optimization, aerodynamics, and mechanical/electrical engineering. The project will study the modeling of a kite-based traction system, including the kite, tethers, and ship, and will develop optimization methods for kite reference trajectories to maximize aerodynamic traction under varying vessel courses and environmental conditions.

A further objective is to account for the energy consumption of the kite’s electric winches in order to improve overall propulsion efficiency.
