About this position

The University of Toronto is inviting applications for the Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellowship, part of Schmidt Sciences’ third call for applications. This is a postdoctoral opportunity for researchers who have completed a PhD and want to pursue a research project applying artificial intelligence to a natural sciences or engineering domain.

The fellowship is designed to support cutting-edge research at the intersection of AI, computational methods, and scientific discovery. It aims to build a community of interdisciplinary leaders while providing both research support and training in AI and related computational skills. Applicants do not need prior AI experience, but they should be motivated to learn and adopt AI methodologies that can accelerate discoveries in their field.

Eligible applicants must hold a PhD in a natural sciences or engineering discipline, including computer science and mathematics. Applicants must also secure a supervisor at the University of Toronto who holds a full-time budgetary tenure-stream or status-only appointment. If the primary supervisor does not have AI expertise, a co-supervisor with AI expertise is required.

Funding is valued at $85,000 CDN per year for two years. The award start date is between May 1, 2027 and January 1, 2028. The application deadline is October 5, 2026 at 5:00 PM EST.

Applications must include an application form, a research proposal, bibliography, training plan, candidate statement, statement on leadership contributions, CV, and two reference letters. The application portal and full guidelines are available through the fellowship website.

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
