About this position
Newcastle University is advertising a Research Assistant/Associate in Soil Modelling within the HOTGROUND project: Identifying Future Risk Hotspots for Underground Cables Affected by Hot Weather. This is a postdoctoral research associate opportunity (with a Research Assistant route also available) focused on soil modelling, computational geomechanics, civil engineering, environmental science, and climate risk assessment.
The project addresses how heatwaves and prolonged hot, dry conditions affect underground electricity cables in the UK. The successful candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team led by Dr Sadegh Nadimi and Professor Sean Wilkinson to analyse cable fault records and climate-related datasets, develop thermo-mechanical soil models, and apply UK climate projections to identify future thermal-risk hotspots across electricity distribution networks.
Eligibility highlights: Research Assistant applicants should hold an honours degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline and have knowledge of numerical modelling and/or computational geomechanics, plus strong programming and data analysis skills (e.g. Python, MATLAB). Research Associate applicants must hold a PhD in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Earth Sciences, Physics or a related discipline, along with strong analytical, communication, and publication/presentation experience.
Funding and contract: The post is fixed term for 12 months and full time. Salary ranges from £33,951 to £35,608 per annum for Research Assistant and £36,636 to £38,784 per annum for Research Associate. The project is funded through collaboration with Northern Powergrid and the Energy Innovation Centre.
Location: Newcastle, United Kingdom.
Deadline: 16 August 2026.
Applicants should apply through the Newcastle University careers portal. For more information, the post links to the Faculty of Science, Agriculture & Engineering, the School of Engineering, and Dr Sadegh Nadimi’s staff profile.
