About this position

Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is offering a PhD position in the Faculty of Engineering, Department of Mechanica van materialen en constructies (MeMC), focused on next-generation steel roof decking with perforations and micro-profiling.

The project is a doctoral research opportunity for a predoctoral researcher working on the structural behaviour and design of light- and micro-profiled steel roof sheeting. The research combines laboratory experiments, finite element modelling, and analytical design-oriented model development to improve understanding of the mechanical behaviour, stability, and load-bearing performance of innovative roofing systems. A major part of the work is the study of the combined effects of micro-profiling and patterned perforations, as well as the interaction between roof sheeting and the supporting steel structure, including rotational restraint and diaphragm action.

The doctoral project is carried out in the framework of PERFORM, a project funded by the European Union under the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS). The successful candidate will work closely with academic and industrial partners to help develop reliable, efficient, and sustainable design solutions for steel roof decking systems. The position may also involve a limited amount of teaching support, such as tutorials, laboratory sessions, and exercises within the MeMC department.

The position is based at VUB’s Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus in Elsene (Brussels). Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field, with a strong background in steel structures, mechanics of materials, computational mechanics, finite element simulations, and optimization. Experience with ABAQUS and programming in Matlab, Python, or C++ is considered an asset. Knowledge of Eurocodes for cold-formed thin-walled steel sections, experimental characterization experience, and publication-oriented writing skills are welcomed. Strong spoken and written English, typically at CEFR level C1 or equivalent, is required.

VUB offers a full-time PhD scholarship for 12 months, extendable up to 48 months subject to positive evaluation of the PhD activities. The scholarship comes with a government-scale grant and access to experimental facilities and substantial computing infrastructure. The university also highlights conference participation opportunities and a supportive, international working environment.
