PhD in Integrated Ocean Observing at Uppsala University

PhD student in Integrated Ocean Observing at Uppsala University (Campus Gotland, Visby, Sweden). This doctoral opening is part of the Formas-funded project Measuring What Matters: Integrating Diverse Data for Holistic Ocean Observing . The project focuses on how to build the next generation of ocean observing systems by integrating biological, environmental, social, economic, and governance data to better understand marine social-ecological systems and support sustainable ocean management. The successful candidate will join the Ocean Futures research group led by Associate Professor Lina Mtwana Nordlund , working in close collaboration with researchers and partners at the University of Gothenburg, Havsmiljöinstitutet, Umeå University, SMHI, and the County Administrative Board of Gotland. The research will examine marine observation and monitoring data, the Global Ocean Observing System’s Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs), and policy/reporting frameworks such as the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). Research tasks include literature reviews, analysis of observing systems and monitoring programmes, development of a decision-support resource for integrated ocean observing, scientific publishing, conference presentations, and interdisciplinary collaboration with academic and government stakeholders. Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in environmental science, marine biology/ecology, oceanography, sustainability, or social-ecological systems; at least 240 higher-education credits with 60 at Master’s level including an independent project; and very good English communication skills. Helpful experience includes ocean observing, environmental monitoring, coastal management, marine governance, marine fieldwork (especially Baltic Sea), interviews, stakeholder engagement, workshops, database work, and statistical analysis. Swedish is advantageous. Funding/employment: full-time temporary doctoral employment funded by Formas. No stipend amount is listed. Deadline: 17 August 2026. Start date is 2026-10-01 or as agreed.
