EngD Position in Advanced Multifunctional Geopolymer-Based Coatings at the University of Twente
This EngD project focuses on Polycondensed Mineral Technology (PMT), a circular, mineral-based coating platform developed by Materialz. The work aims to advance PMT coatings into multifunctional systems with improved heat resistance, corrosion protection, repairability, and circularity, while exploring additional capabilities such as radio-frequency and infrared signature reduction.
The position is based at the University of Twente and is carried out in close collaboration with the industrial partner Materialz and other stakeholders in advanced coating technologies. The successful candidate will contribute to coating formulation and application, surface and interface engineering, adhesion and durability assessment, and demonstrator development. Most of the work will be conducted at the university, with relevant courses and scientific support provided through the EngD framework and Graduate School Twente.
The opportunity is suitable for applicants with a Master’s degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related field, and with a strong interest in surface technology, coatings, adhesion, advanced materials, and experimental mechanics. The role emphasizes a practical, hands-on approach, independence, teamwork in an interdisciplinary environment, and the ability to work on real-world problems with industrial relevance. Strong English communication skills are required.
Funding and conditions are attractive: this is a full-time, 2-year EngD position with a gross salary of €3,029 per month, plus an 8% holiday allowance, an 8.3% year-end bonus, pension contributions, health care benefits, and at least 29 holidays per year. The appointee will have full employee status at the University of Twente and access to a vibrant international research environment and excellent facilities.
