Postdoctoral position - The Polymer Morphology Department
The Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, Czech Academy of Sciences, is advertising a full-time postdoctoral position in the Polymer Morphology Department in Prague, Czech Republic. The role is centered on polymer materials research, electron microscopy, and software development for advanced diffraction analysis, with a starting date of 1 September 2026.
The department works on the analysis of polymer materials using LM, SEM, TEM, Cryo-EM, and microindentation, together with studies of relationships between structure and micro- and macro-mechanical properties. Its broader research includes biodegradable polymers based on thermoplasticized starch, new resin systems for 3D electron microscopy, and software development for 4D-STEM and electron diffraction.
The successful candidate will undertake independent, concept-driven research in electron microscopy, especially software development for 4D-STEM microscopy. Core tasks include development of the 4D-STEM/PNBD method for identifying nanocrystals with SEM microscopy, converting complex 4D-STEM datasets into simplified 2D powder diffractograms, and extending user-friendly, semi-automatic processing methods for powder and single-crystal diffractograms. The work builds on the STEMDIFF and EDIFF software packages.
The post also involves interpreting experimental data, publishing results in high-impact journals, and active participation in national and international research projects. In addition, the postholder is expected to contribute to other department projects, including measurement of the mechanical properties of polymers, creep resistance at micro- and macroscopic scales, microindentation, tensile testing, and development of software for automated data acquisition from measuring units. Another focus is data processing and correlation analysis across polymer systems such as blends, microcomposites, and nanocomposites.
This is a postdoctoral opening for candidates holding a Ph.D. or equivalent in materials science, chemistry, or a related field. Required experience includes scanning and transmission electron microscopy, the ability to collect microscopic data and publish in high-impact international journals, strong spoken and written English, and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively.
Funding is not listed as an EU Research Framework Programme award.
