PhD and MPhil Opportunities in Civil Engineering, AI, Computer Vision, and Robotics at HKUST

HKUST’s Machine Vision & Smart Infrastructure Lab (MVSI) in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is recruiting motivated MPhil and PhD students for Spring and Fall 2027 . The lab is led by Assistant Professor Xiao Pan at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology . The research group works at the intersection of civil engineering , computer science , robotics , AI , computer vision , point clouds , sensor fusion , and multimodal reasoning . Current themes include structural damage detection, UAV/UGV-based inspection, construction automation, automated engineering drawing parsing, digital twins, and smart infrastructure for buildings, bridges, roads, and tunnels. Selected candidates will be fully funded for 4 years . The post also notes that exceptional candidates may be nominated for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) , which provides a higher stipend and travel allowance, and HKUST HKPFS awardees receive a tuition fee waiver.
