About this position
University of Essex is offering a fully funded MSc plus PhD studentship under the Sustainable Transitions – Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme. This opportunity is designed for applicants interested in sustainability, business, environment, governance, commerce, trade, and interdisciplinary doctoral research.
The successful candidate will first complete one of the following master’s degrees starting in January 2027: MSc Business Analytics, MSc International Business and Entrepreneurship, or MSc International Logistics and Supply Chain Management. After the master’s year, the scholar will progress to the PhD phase and further develop the research proposal in consultation with the supervisory team.
Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree in a business-related subject and submit a 1000-word maximum project area proposal focused on environment and sustainability as it relates to business, governance, commerce, or trade. The proposal must also integrate one interdisciplinary area from Law, Sociology, Government, or Life Sciences. Prior knowledge of the additional discipline is not required, as training will be provided.
Funding includes full tuition coverage, an annual living stipend at the UKRI recommended level (listed as £21,805 for 2026–27), a £10,000 research allowance for authorised research costs, and access to £2,500 through Proficio for training courses. Scholars also gain access to the University of Essex’s Centre for Environment and Society and related training/support opportunities.
Eligibility is restricted to UK-domiciled applicants who do not already have a Master’s degree and who come from a low-income household background and/or meet the specified ethnicity criteria listed in the call.
