About this position

FCUP, the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, is calling for applications for one Master’s-level research grant in Engineering Physics within project LA/P/0095/2020, financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through national funds.

The work will be carried out in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, under the supervision of João Pedro Esteves de Araújo. The project focuses on optimized production of nanodiamonds and graphene for quantum technologies, using ultrasonication and laser ablation in liquids, plus a feasibility study for an optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) system for nanodiamond characterization.

Eligibility: applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Engineering Physics and be enrolled in a PhD programme or in a non-degree course. Preference is given to candidates with experience in the fabrication and characterization of naturally layered materials, exfoliation processes, and the production/characterization of nanodiamonds. Foreign degrees must be formally recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution before contracting.

Funding: the grant stipend is €1359.64/month. The initial duration is 3 months, starting 15 September 2026, with possible renewal up to the project end date of 31 December 2026. The grant includes personal accident insurance and, if the grant lasts 6 months or more, support for voluntary social insurance contributions within the first tax bracket.

Application: submit the application online via the FCUP Infociências portal. Required documents include a motivation letter, detailed CV, academic certificate, eligibility declaration, and other relevant documents, all uploaded in a single ZIP file. One recommendation letter is mandatory, and referees must be entered through the recommendation system before the deadline.

Deadline: applications are open from 23/07/2026 to 05/08/2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Lisbon).
