About this position

Applications are now open for Round 8 of the Australian Government’s National Industry PhD (NIPhD) Program, an industry-engaged doctoral opportunity for candidates interested in collaborative, real-world research.

The program supports PhD projects co-designed by a university and an eligible Australian industry partner, with joint supervision and a strong focus on innovation, commercialisation, and professional development. It is designed for candidates who want to build research careers that move between academia and industry.

Research areas: the post does not restrict applicants to a single discipline; projects are expected to be industry-focused and suitable for doctoral research. Depending on the project, relevant fields may include business, management, economics, computer science, information technology, engineering, and other applied research areas.

Funding: Industry Linked PhD candidates receive their regular PhD stipend plus a top-up of at least $10,000 from the industry partner and $7,135 from the Australian Government for awards commencing in 2026. Funding is available for up to four years full-time or eight years part-time. Universities may also provide additional allowances for travel, conferences, relocation, and publication. Industry Researcher PhD candidates continue to receive salary and employment benefits from their employer, with government support to the employer.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must have a university, an industry partner, and an industry-focused PhD project in place. For the Industry Linked stream, candidates must hold or be eligible for an RTP Stipend (or similar scholarship) and an RTP Fees Offset Scholarship. International students are eligible. The program also supports industry professionals who remain employed while undertaking the PhD in the Industry Researcher stream.

Application window: Round 8 opens on 13 July 2026 and closes on 21 August 2026. Applicants are encouraged to register an Expression of Interest and begin discussions with prospective supervisors and industry partners well before the deadline.

How to apply: register interest via the EOI form if needed, then work with the university’s Graduate Research Liaison Office to submit the application once the round is open. If you do not yet have a partner, contact Campus Plus for assistance.
