About this position

University of Antwerp is offering a PhD opportunity in children’s literature studies titled “Scenes of friendship in German and English children’s literature”.

The project is based in the Department of Literature at the University of Antwerp and focuses on how friendship is represented and practiced in English- and German-language children’s books. The research combines literary studies with friendship studies and uses narrative analysis, close reading, and discourse analysis. Key themes include friendship, relationality, conflict resolution, age, gender, race, class, religion, historical context, genre, and the role of adults and readers in children’s literature.

The successful candidate will work toward a PhD dissertation, publish peer-reviewed articles, present conference papers, and contribute limited teaching and research support in English and German literature.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a Master’s degree in German and/or English Literature, or a closely related field; strong academic results are expected. Experience with children’s literature is preferred. High proficiency in both English and German is required.

Funding: this is a full-time doctoral scholarship for two years, renewable once for another two-year period after positive evaluation. The scholarship includes a monthly stipend according to University of Antwerp rates, plus ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance, and bicycle or public transport commuting support.

Application deadline: 10 August 2026 (midnight Brussels time). The selection interview is scheduled for 26 August.

How to apply: submit the application via the University of Antwerp online portal and include a motivation letter, CV, writing sample, and up to three references. For questions about the position, contact Prof. Andree Michaelis-König and Prof. Vanessa Joosen.
