About this position
PhD opportunity in microbial ecology, metagenomics, freshwater ecosystems, and environmental science at the Cawthron Institute and Lincoln University in New Zealand.
This project will use a nationally unique dataset of metagenomic sequences from more than 150 lakes across Aotearoa New Zealand to study how microbial functional genes reflect freshwater ecosystem stress and recovery. The research will integrate genomic data with environmental and limnological datasets to examine how nutrient enrichment, land-use change, climate warming, invasive species, and hydrological modification influence ecosystem function.
The successful PhD candidate will characterise spatial patterns in microbial functional genes across diverse lake types, investigate relationships between microbial functions and environmental drivers, and examine how multiple stressors interact across local and national scales. Depending on interests and experience, there may also be opportunities for field sampling and laboratory experiments to validate genomic findings.
Applicants should have a background in environmental science, ecology, microbiology, molecular biology, or a related field, plus an interest in microbial ecology, genomics, and environmental data science. Experience with R or similar software is desirable, and strong communication skills plus the ability to work independently and collaboratively are expected.
Funding includes NZ$35,000 per annum tax free and full domestic or international tuition fees. Applicants must meet Lincoln University PhD entry requirements. The closing date is 30 August 2026, and applications are reviewed as they are received, so early submission is encouraged.
To apply, submit a short statement of fit and interest, your CV, academic transcripts, and the names and contact details of two academic referees via the Cawthron Careers page.
