About this position
PhD opportunity at Monash University Malaysia in the project Precision blood-cell biomarkers for early prediction of severe dengue, part of the Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS 2026).
The project focuses on establishing a prospective dengue cohort at University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) to identify early blood-cell signatures that predict severe disease. The research combines immunology, cell biology, virology, bioinformatics, genomics, medical statistics, and machine learning. Samples will be processed in Kuala Lumpur and profiled using high-dimensional CyTOF and CITE-seq, with data integration aimed at building a compact biomarker panel for point-of-care diagnostics.
The project is supported by LifeArc and a joint MUM–MUA clinical, immunology, and bioinformatics team, with cross-site co-supervision and training involving the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI). The work is based in Subang Jaya, Malaysia, with an immersive mobility year available in Monash University Australia, Monash University Indonesia, or the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.
Ideal applicants should have prior experience in immunology and clinical or biobank-linked research, plus competence in animal cell culture and core molecular biology techniques. Strong documentation, responsible data management, and scientific writing are expected. Basic R/Python analysis is preferred, and omics data analysis experience is an advantage.
This is a competition-funded PhD opportunity for students worldwide. Applicants must have First Class Honours (H1) or equivalent recognised by Monash University Malaysia and meet English language requirements.
To apply, first contact the main supervisor to confirm fit, then submit the application via the GEMS application process and select the advertised research topic. Refer to the application submission guide for full requirements.
