About this position

The Concrete, Sustainability and Smart Structures (C3S) group at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC·BarcelonaTech) in Barcelona is inviting candidates to apply for a Joan Oró predoctoral fellowship leading to a PhD in civil and environmental engineering.

The group works at the intersection of construction and digitalization, with research spanning optimization of construction processes, new and alternative cementitious materials, sensor-based monitoring of concrete performance, and sustainability assessment of infrastructure. The team is active in national and large-scale European projects and collaborates with academic and industrial partners in Barcelona.

The selected doctoral candidate will develop their thesis within one of four research lines: early-age microcracking, monitoring and sensor development; AI-driven management of sustainable concrete; digital twins of construction sites and information management; or mathematical models for infrastructure impact and infrastructure economics.

Eligibility is broad but specific: applicants must satisfy at least one of the following routes — a bachelor’s degree from the EHEA, a completed or ongoing master’s degree from the EHEA, or current enrolment in a doctoral programme at a Catalan university. In addition, the bachelor’s weighted average must be at least 8.50/10 on the Spanish scale, studies giving access to the doctorate must have been completed between 1 January 2023 and the contract start date, and applicants must not have held a previous predoctoral contract. Suitable backgrounds include civil engineering, materials engineering, industrial engineering, mathematics/statistics (for the fourth line), or a related discipline. English at B2 level or higher is required.

The application deadline is 30 September 2026 at 23:59 UTC. Applications should be submitted by email to research@c3s-barcelona.com with the specified subject line and the required documents: CV, official transcripts, Spanish grade equivalence declaration(s), the exact end date of the studies giving access to the doctorate, and a one-page proposal aligned with the chosen research line.

This is a full-time temporary PhD opportunity in Barcelona for candidates interested in smart structures, sustainable concrete, digital construction, and infrastructure analysis.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.

How to apply

Please submit your application including a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact information for two references. Applications should be sent via the online portal before the deadline.
