About this position

FAPESP is advertising a PhD Scholarship in Biogeochemistry / Soil Organic Matter for a project titled Lithological control in the persistence of soil organic carbon: a multiscale approach at the Luiz de Queiroz School of Agriculture, University of São Paulo (ESALQ-USP) in Piracicaba, Brazil.

The project investigates how lithology influences soil organic carbon stocks and persistence across landscapes. The doctoral researcher will collect and analyze soils developed from different lithologies and use a broad set of methods, including isotopy, gas chromatography coupled with pyrolysis mass spectrometry (Py-GCMS), Rock-Eval, FTIR spectroscopy, microbial functional diversity analyses, physical fractionation, and selective extractions of soil organic matter.

Eligibility highlights: a master's degree in Soil Science or a related field, experience in soil analysis, and the ability to write scientific papers in English. Preferred experience includes soil organic matter, physical fractionation, spectroscopy, wet chemical extractions, statistics, and programming in R and/or Python.

Funding: FAPESP scholarship with a monthly amount of R$ 5,790.00. The expected start date is March 2027.

How to apply: send a CV and cover letter to francisco.ruiz@usp.br with the subject line “Bolsa Doutorado Geração”. Applicants must also register and be approved in the selection process for the Postgraduate Program in Soil and Plant Nutrition; registration is expected to begin in August 2026.

Deadline: 2026-08-14.
